Sensei Schroeder leaves behind his dear wife and partner Jan, his son Jerod, and hundreds of current and former martial arts students who will miss his teaching, deep knowledge of the martial arts, good advice, and compassion. Sensei Schroeder always taught his students to focus on the details of what they were practicing and to constantly try to perfect their art. He encouraged students to slow down and focus on technique first. He cared about his students as people first. Over the years, Sensei Schroeder promoted many students to advanced Karate and Kobudo rank, and they will continue to teach what he taught and carry on his legacy.
He was the first student to be promoted to 9th Degree Black Belt in Karate from Soke Tadashi Yamashita. He also was the first 9th Degree Black Belt promoted in Kobudo under Soke Tadashi Yamashita and the only 10th Degree Black Belt promoted by Soke Yamashita in Shorin-Ryu Karate.
Daniel Schroeder Hanshi (10th Dan in Shorin-Ryu Karate, 9th Dan in Yamashita-Matayoshi Kobudo) passed away on February 24th 2025. He was 79 years old.
Sensei Schroeder started his martial arts journey in 1964 at the Milwaukee Academy of Karate and Judo under Ken Kasianowicz, studying Goshin-Do Karate. Later in 1969 he met Sensei Tadashi Yamashita at a seminar in Indiana and was completely amazed with his abilities. When Sensei Kasianowicz retired in 1970, he asked Sensei Yamashita to formally accept him as his student. “He accepted me and my life changed forever."
